Since the store opened, I've been asked many times where I got my inspiration for Flourish and Bask. All I can say is that I was born a generation or two late. I've always had an obsession with old black and white movies, swing music and a fascination with the old traditions of setting a beautiful table, lighting candles, and serving dinner on the best china.
I'm not a person who cooks gourmet meals, or throws lavish parties for dozens of people. But I love to put fresh flowers on the table, light some candles, and set the mood. I enjoy having friends over, and want everyone to feel comfortable in my home. I take a few extra minutes to make things look pretty, even if it means putting bakery cupcakes on a glass pedestal, or serving a take-out meal on my grandmother's china.
I opened Flourish and Bask to show people that even though entertaining can sometimes be intimidating, it doesn't have to be difficult. The house doesn't have to be perfectly spotless, and you don't have to cook a recipe from a fancy cook book. Instead of scrubbing the bath tub, take a moment to light candles, throw a bunch of market flowers in a vase or two and make sure you have the ingredients for a great cocktail on hand to serve your guests.
Beyond that, relax, and enjoy your guests. At the end of the night if they don't notice the un-swept floor but remember how comfortable they felt in your home, and how much they laughed, I call it a #hostingwin.
Cheers!
